Community - Zach Paez

"Community" is a relatively new sitcom on NBC. Definitely not as bright or evolved as 30 Rock but worth mentioning and definitely worth watching. 30 Rock's talented cast portray characters rich with eccentricities. Characters exploit these eccentricities while at the same time managing to create these amazingly funny, on-going, symbiotic relationships. 30 Rock has recognized the strengths of supporting cast members and woven them into their clever and brilliantly written scripts.

Community too has developed a quirky entertaining bunch of characters with viewers embracing and anticipating the antics of certain characters but not as character inclusive as 30 Rock. Community's scripts and writing seemed to be developing nicely until the episode, Environmental Science. I hope this is not indicative of the future of Community's scripts. Writer Zack Paez delivers one-liners but fails to create any meaningful dialogues or sustainable moments between scenes and characters. His transitioning is a lesson in "what not to do" in script writing. Writing is more than the careful delivery of one-lingers. Paez's writing might be better suited for short sketches and stand-up rather than television where scripts have to at least make it to the first commercial. Community has a great cast and the potential to develop into something quite sustainable and successful if it can maintain a good and sustainable writing staff.
